Some paintings from my exhibition at the Rookery Cafe in Juneau. Seli (Selasphorus rufus sapien) is an imaginary character that came to life while I was studying the art of Hieronymus Bosch. Seli’s grandfather, Karl Fritzaf, was a gnome from Finland who traveled with a miner to Juneau during the gold rush. Seli’s grandmother and mother are Rufous hummingbirds who migrate to the mossy woods of Southeast Alaska each summer. Seli doesn’t have wings, so he lives year-round in an abandoned woodpecker’s nest. Seli would like to spend his days working in his elaborate woodworking shop, but the forest folk rely on his "sisu" (finnish for "determination" or "ability fight against the odds"), his hands and fingers, and his feet that can wear Xtratufs to solve forest problems that mainly evolve due to interactions with humans. In this picture, Seli tries to keep Horibus, a Brown Bear, from eating garbage. Horibus has complained of an upset stomach and Seli, although thoroughly frightened of the grizzly, suggests that the bear put the bungee cord back on the garbage can and go to the river, nearby, where Seli was pretty sure he saw a fresh deer carcass left behind by hunters. Red-Tailed Hawk is a master predator and a regular foe of Seli. Seli’s encounter with a Red Tail Hawk when he was still a fledgling is legendary. Beyond having hands, feet, and a healthy amount of "sisu", Seli also has an ear-piercing high tenor voice. Seli was snatched up in the talons of a hawk invading his mother’s nest. As the hawk soared up into the misty clouds, Seli let loose a high E-flat that rolled the hawks eyes back into its head and made him release Seli. Corvus (Raven) is Seli’s best and dearest friend. Seli found the fledgling Corvus sitting on the roof of his woodworking shop after the bird had been kicked out of its nest by an older sibling. Like Seli, Corvus can’t fly, mostly because Seli didn’t know how to teach him. Corvus dreams of soaring in the air and often sits on the hood-ornament of a nearby abandoned Fleetwood Cadillac. Oriole — I like to combine patterns in art and nature. Here the bold colors of the Baltimore Oriole are supported by a china pattern. Goldfinch — this was one of my first bird pictures and has remained my favorite. My in-laws, Phil and Kathy Wayne, live in Sequim, Washington, where in summer the farmlands and county roads are filled with the song and color of the American Goldfinch. Here the Goldfinch sits on a thistle in Sequim. Paisley Evolution I — I love paisley prints. Here a Red-Necked Grebe emerges from paisley. Paisley Evolution II — the Red-Necked Grebe more fully emerged from the paisley and infused with it. Two Goslings — I painted this shortly after adopting my two daughters, Anna and Nelli. The girls were like two little goslings that followed me around everywhere I went. I added pattern accents from two separate pieces of my grandmother’s china. Loons — I love the pattern and supple form of the Common Loon. Here I combined an upholstery pattern with a mother loon and her baby. I see the lines of the upholstery moving with the loons. Ruby-throated Hummingbird — I found this china pattern in a design magazine and it reminded me of this bird. Erlkönig Series — these four paintings, "Mein Vater," "Mein Sohn," "Elfking," and "Elfking's Daughters," illustrate a poem by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe set to music by Franz Schubert in Der Erlkönig (The Elfking) in 1815. Here is a literal translation from German to English, provided by Wikipedia: It is the father with his child. He has the boy well in his arm He holds him safely, he keeps him warm. "My son, why do you hide your face so anxiously?" "Father, do you not see the Elfking? The Elfking with crown and tail?" "My son, it's a wisp of fog." "You dear child, come, go with me! Very lovely games I'll play with you; Some colourful flowers are on the beach, My mother has some gold
