Out from Girton, 1960
Girton College, Cambridge is the world's oldest University College originally for women. This image, taken at the time just for its purely photographic qualities, symbolises the choice for a young woman in 1960: take my newly-minted degree and go out into the 'world', or stay in College and become a great polymath, probably never to be married. The view is from under the arch through the wrought-iron gate from Woodlands Court and towards the Huntingdon Road.

What a penetrating image. I love the well-worn groove on the ground where the gate has been opened countless times.
